Marine S Sgt Dustin Ramirez reached out with a video call and sent Angel Beanie Baby to my friend Michael Ragusa. Michael was in a near fatal motor vehicle accident when he was 13 years old. He had sustained a severe traumatic brain injury and over two dozen skull fractures. Given less than a zero chance of survival, he has far surpassed those odds, though he remains quadriplegic. He collected pins, cards, hats, etc. from people that serve our cities and country. He loves receiving items with notes in the mail. This joy helps him get through the days and honor those he considers his hero's. The Marines are sending a few items for him to add to his collection.
We are very thankful to former Police Commissioner Ray Kelly and others in the NYPD for send him items for his growing collections.
If you would like to send something to Michael please click here and send his Mother an email for more details.

A day when residents and charities came together.

On October 29, 2013, over 400 residents and charities united at the Light The Shore- Gerritsen Beach Ceremony to remember those we lost, honor the volunteers, and to show support for those still struggling with rebuilding after Hurricane Sandy. This event in Gerritsen Beach was organized by Michael Taylor, President of We
Care New York, Inc., in collaboration with Nick Curattalo, creator of the GBSandyRelief Facebook page. The Brooklyn Long Term Recovery Group, under the leadership of Dr. Rev. Anthony, supported over a dozen Light the Shore events throughout Brooklyn to mark the 1 year anniversary of Hurricane Sandy. This storm forever changed the lives of all residents living in New York City's shorefront communities, many of whom are still trying to rebuild and recover from this disaster. In Gerritsen Beach alone, over 2,000 homes, businesses and structures were flooded, affecting more than 2,300 families. Many residents are already back to the "new normal" in a home that has been repaired, treated for mold and had power, heat and hot water restored. However, hundreds in Gerritsen Beach are still struggling to rebuild and recover from this disaster. The speakers expressed their support for those still suffering as they attempt to rebuild their lives. We took time to give thanks to everyone who so graciously volunteered their time and money to help see us through this disaster. We hope you enjoy the videos and photos below.

Sandy affected residents in some way.
To everyone that helped...
Thank You!

We Care NY is proud to sponsor and support Resurrection sports programs in Gerritsen Beach. The volunteers do a great job teaching our children sportsmanship and how to play.
Surviving Sandy...The Superstorm that reshaped our lives.

Sandy’s angry winds and waves devoured beachside housing, piers, and marinas, not only in Mantoloking, but for many miles in either direction, including New York City. When it was over, the devastation left behind was staggering: $50-60 billion in property damage and business loss, and one hundred and ten lives lost, including two little boys swept away in Staten Island as their mother tried to flee the storm.
This book recounts the solemnity of these events with personal accounts of survival and endurance, garnished with stories of unselfishness and charity which impart hope for a brighter future.

A note from one of the wonderful people that created the Surviving Sandy book.
It was a privilege to join your community to “Light The Shore” on Tuesday 10/29/13 evening. I was truly impressed with how close-knit and family oriented the Gerritsen Beach community is. As an “outsider” from Rockland County, NY looking in, the sense of unity was apparent and genuine. Mr. Michael Taylor’s tireless devotion and the compassion he brings to this cause, is something I witnessed firsthand. His ability and insight helped bridge a generation gap, to bring the young and old together to rebuild and recover from Super Storm Sandy. As Helen Keller once said, “Alone we can do so little. Together we can do much more”. Thanks again

In early December 2013 Canarsie resident Jill Mullings of Agape a 501(c)3 charity arranged for 100 used kids bikes for Sandy affected children in the Rockaways with the help of Marissa Bernowitz and the ladies of the Rockaway Free Flea Market. This project started by Dr. Appel and supported by Danny's Cycle will give over a hundred children thousands of smiles and hours of fun. Helping others is nothing new for Mrs. Mullings or the amazingly caring Marissa Bernowitz. Over the years Ms. Mullings has provide bikes for many kids around Brooklyn, food for families also many other services and support to help others. We Care New York is proud to be working with both of these caring volunteers to help more people together.
Just picking up the bikes was not enough for them. They found a way to help victims of the disaster in the Philippines. On the same day they transported supplies to a location that is arranging to bring needed items to the Philippines. Great work ladies...

Schumer: Hold off on flood insurance hikes

By Judy L. Randall Staten Island Advance
on October 14, 2013 at 6:38 PM, updated October 15, 2013 at 7:35 AM
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Federal lawmakers are calling for a time-out on anticipated increases in flood insurance rates -- which could hike premiums by 20 percent -- as new flood maps are in the process of being adopted.
The increases are a result of the Biggert-Waters Flood Insurance Reform Act. Under Biggert-Waters, FEMA was mandated to conduct a study on the impact of higher premiums on the affordability of housing in impacted areas, including those hit by Hurricane Sandy.
U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer is among those pointing out that while FEMA was to have completed the study last April, it only began its review recently.
He and others in Congress are calling for a halt in premium increases until the study is done and until recommendations designed to address affordability are considered.
Homeowners who have federally subsidized premiums could face an annual increase by as much as 20 percent, Schumer (D-N.Y.) said.
In addition, homeowners looking to sell could see the value of their homes decrease because the new owners could ask for an off-set to meet higher premiums.
Biggert-Waters was passed last year to reauthorize the National Flood Insurance Program to make it self-sustainable.
Schumer (D-N.Y.) was among those to sign on to a letter by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell calling for a "comprehensive and fiscally responsible legislative solution," and warning that "sharp rate increases ... could render flood insurance unaffordable and unattainable for up to 4 million homeowners and businesses nationwide."

International Coastal Clean Up, 9/28/13

We found plenty of shoreline garbage hiding in the vegetation. It was a great day for the kids and the environment. We Care NY was proud to continue this decades old program called the International Coastal Clean Up to document and remove the garbage from Shellbank & Gerritsen Creek shorelines. This program coordinated by the American Littoral Society with the data compiled by the Ocean Conservitory to document the shoreline and waterway garbage around the world every year.
To see more photos, our clean up stats, a kids story about the day and videos click on the link below for

We would like to thank our supporters of this event: Mitsubishi Corporation- (Americas), Astoria Federal Savings, Brenmans, K of C #5989, PS 277, Boy Scout Troop #396, NYC Parks, NYPD, DOS, and the American Littoral Society for everything they do to help improve the environment.

Where's the shoreline garbage?

We Care NY is preparing for the international coastal clean up with the American Littoral society on September 28th 10 am to 2 pm. The local school children and residents have been invited to participate in this great day for the kids and the environment. The shoreline has been totally cleaned thanks to the hard work by the Wildcats program helping the community and residents in Gerritsen Beach. It's the first time and a good problem for us to have. We have found a solution to this problem. We have arrange for the garbage from others parts of the Shellbank creek shoreline to be transported to the end of Gerritsen Avenue to be documented and removed as part of this world-wide effort. Keep up the great work Wildcats!!

9/22/13 8 pm. SISFI Radio- Call 347.989.8875 to Listen or Participate!

Tonight at 8pm, Mr. Michael Taylor is one of my guests on SISFI's panel discussion about the Healthcare
Crisis in NYC with Hospital Closures” on SISFI Radio. He will be talking about his org We Care New York and the work being done in addressing the healthcare challenges of people in Brooklyn.
Listen LIVE via phone at 347.989.8875 or online via the show page http://tobtr.com/s/5391457.
Join me for this special focus on the Healthcare Crisis in NYC and the reality of the impacts on the city as a whole. There are many rumors of what's happening with the hospitals across the city and how the management teams, board of directors, Department of Health “DOH” and union plays into them, and so we are going to bring you the facts, realities and the impacts thus far and ensuing crisis to the forefront for dialog and awareness. There are critical and needed services that are being cut, have been outsourced, are no longer available and more layoffs from hospitals which doesn’t make them full service healthcare systems capable of handling the critical needs of our affected communities if these
critical pieces are missing.
My guests are various community leaders and orgs from across NYC and executives from the 1199 Union who oversee operations at various hospitals across the city. Please share with your network and
help to get the word out. Thank you and God bless, Bret

HEALTH DEPARTMENT TO SPRAY PESTICIDE IN BROOKLYN
Subject: HEALTH DEPARTMENT TO SPRAY PESTICIDE TO REDUCE THE NUMBER OF MOSQUITOES AND THE RISK OF WEST NILE VIRUS IN SELECTED PARTS OF BROOKLYN
HEALTH DEPARTMENT TO SPRAY PESTICIDE TO REDUCE THE NUMBER OF MOSQUITOES AND THE RISK OF WEST NILE VIRUS IN SELECTED PARTS OF BROOKLYN
August 29, 2013 – To reduce mosquito activity and the risk of West Nile virus, the Health Department will spray pesticide from trucks in parts of Brooklyn on Wednesday, September 4, 2013 between the hours of 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. the following morning, weather permitting. In case of bad weather, application will be delayed until Thursday, September 5, 2013 during the same hours. The neighborhoods listed below are being treated due to rising West Nile virus activity with high mosquito populations.
Locations of Application
Neighborhoods: Parts of Brighton Beach, Bergen Beach, Coney Island, East Flat Bush, Flatlands, Georgetown, Gravesend, Gerritsen Beach, Homecrest, Marine Park, Manhattan Beach, Midwood, Middle Basin, Mill Island, Mill Basin, Sea Gate, Sheepshead Bay
Boundaries: Bordered by Avenue D, Brooklyn Avenue, East 36th Street, Avenue I, East 14th Street, Avenue U, Nostrand Avenue, Avenue X and 86th Street to the North; Bay Parkway and Gravesend Bay to the West; Atlantic Ocean, Knapp Ave, Sheepshead Bay, Avenue X and Gerritsen Avenue to the South; and Belt Parkway, Paerdegat Basin and Ralph Avenue to the East

For these sprayings, the Health Department will use a very low concentration of Anvil® 10+10, a synthetic pesticide. When properly used, this
product poses no significant risks to human health. The Health Department recommends that people take the following precautions to minimize direct exposure:
·
Whenever possible, stay indoors during spraying. People with asthma or other respiratory conditions are encouraged to stay inside during spraying since direct exposure could worsen these conditions.
·
Air conditioners may remain on, however, if you wish to reduce the possibility of indoor exposure to pesticides, set the air conditioner vent to the closed position, or choose the re-circulate function.
·
Remove children’s toys, outdoor equipment, and clothes from outdoor areas during spraying. If outdoor equipment and toys are exposed to pesticides, wash them with soap and water before using again. Wash skin and clothing exposed to pesticides with soap and water. Always wash your produce thoroughly with water before cooking or eating.
Reducing Exposure to Mosquitoes: Consider reducing the amount of time spent outdoors during the hours between dusk and dawn in areas with heavy mosquito populations. Use an approved insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus (not for children under three). ·
Eliminate any standing water from your property, and dispose of containers that can collect water. Standing water is a violation of the New York City Health Code.
Make sure roof gutters are clean and draining properly.
Clean and chlorinate swimming pools, outdoor saunas and hot tubs. Keep them empty and covered if not in use; drain water that collects in pool
covers.
Report standing water by calling 311 or visiting nyc.gov.

SISFI Radio Program "Human Crisis" with Bret Scudder

We Care NY participated in a radio program with SISFI in association with NY Humanitarians Network "NYHN", NYC Community Activists Network "NYCCAN", My Rockaways Media "MyRM", The Rockaways Community Actions & Response Coalition “TRCAARC” and International Community Media Network Project "ICMNP" presents a special feature on "Human Crisis: The Real Human Challenges of Sandy’s Aftermath" on Sunday Aug. 18th, 8pm EST on SISFI Radio. Listen and join
the dialog LIVE on the AIR by calling 347.989.8875 or online via the show page here http://tobtr.com/s/5290337.
This feature will be a real dialog about Health and Mental Health impacts being felt by victims of Sandy across NY & NJ and need for more effective resources. Many people who have been exposed to the dust, mold, contaminated water and poor nutrition (especially the children) for the first 6 months after the storm will have some form of life-long impacts on health and mental health levels. The stressors of housing and relocation have taken very serious toll on victims as they try to adjust. While we look at rebuilding infrastructure, what are we doing about the quality healthcare and mental health challenges and services needed. Health and mental health losses can't be replaced.
Mr. Brett A. Scudder hosts this special feature with special guests Dr-Edward Williams, executive director of Ready Rockaway and Mr. Michael Taylor, president of We Care New York. We may also be joined by other guests from some of the Long Term Recovery Groups across NYC.
A very special thank you to our guests for taking the time to be a part of this special feature. We look forward to the dialog and really getting into the real core of the challenges and needs.

Mr.
Please promote this great service...
Night Out Against Crime at 69th, 63rd & 61st PCT.

On Tuesday, August 6, We Care NY participated in three National Night Out Against Crime events with the help of victim volunteers. The events were hosted by the 61st, 63rd and 69th Police Precincts. Thousands of residents from Sheepshead Bay, Canarsie, Bergen Beach, Gerritsen Beach, Marine Park and Mill Basin attended the events near their communities. The events had rides, food, giveaways and activities that were enjoyed and appreciated by all. Volunteers spoke with Sandy-flooded residents about recovery issues. We provided our Sandy Resource Newsletter to affected residents to better connect them to the services they are entitled to receive. We provided Skechers to Sandy-affected kids, which were generously provided by Rockaway Wish. WCNY also surveyed affected residents at the 69th and 63rd Precinct events about Hurricane Sandy-related issues. Our volunteers included Michael Taylor, Jill Mullings, Ms. Kim, Josette Glemaud, and Maureen Young and her wonderful girls (69th Pct.); Cherie Lang and Hillary Stackpole (63rd Pct.); and Janet Behrens, Pat Bartha and Dawn Santiago (61st Pct.). All were happy to help us help others! Click here to see the photos!

Scouts provide bikes for Canarsie kids

On 6/27/13 under the leadership of Dr. Appel we received a large number of gentle used bicycles. Partial distribution of these bicycles were made to children living in Canarsie, a community greatly affected by Super Storm Sandy. Words just couldn't describe the joy, excitement and laughter I saw when these children and their mothers got these bicycles. Witnessing and being a part of this, makes it all worth while.
On behalf of The Agape Community Support I sincerely thank everyone for making this possible, for changing lives and bringing joy to so many children. It was a community working collaboratively to make this happen. Dr. Apple, Danny's Cycle, The Boys Scout Troop, We Care New York, Mr Michael Taylor, Mr. & Mrs. Clarke, Ms. Josette Glemaud, Ms. Debbie Tiamfook, Friends, and Canarsie young group of volunteers. God bless you all. Jill Mullings of Agape Community Support, Inc.

On
May 27, 2013, hundreds of residents lined the street and marched to support the
VFW Post 107 Memorial Day Parade. According to the 61st Police Precinct, over
500 people participated, the biggest turnout in recent years. It was great to
see the community, particularly so many young children, come out to show their
support to our veterans and to pay tribute to all those who gave their life
protecting our country. We Care New York volunteers and Board of Directors were honored to provide some assistance to help make this day of remembrance one
that we will all remember for years to come.

2013 Annual BayFest organized by the Bay Improvement Group (BIG)

WCNY was happy and proud to be a small help to the Bay Improvement Group's 22nd Annual BayFest, Brooklyn's Largest Waterfront Celebration with Music, Kids Fun & Sandy Recovery Help on Sunday, May 19, 2013. It was a rainy and wet day for the volunteers, performers, sponsors, sandy resources and participants that came out in the rain to make sure the event went on. The music, games, and free information was enjoyed by those that stopped by during the day. A great job by Bay Improvement Group's Exective Director Laura McKenna, President Steve Barrison and all their volunteers and sponsors.
Thank You Volunteers from Ohio
Pastor Larry Kaufman and over a dozen volunteers from Ohio were in Gerritsen Beach helping for a few days. The Ohio volunteers cleaned, planted and maintained local gardens to help our community recover. They hope the flowers and garden will bloom and bring a bit of joy to those that visit. A very special thanks to our friend Pastor Connie Hulla of the Coney Island Gospel Assembly Church for pointing the group to WCNY when they needed a kid friendly volunteer project to do during their visit.
